Trailheads

Find Forest Service trailheads and read the permits, passes and rules on file for each.

The web map at glassing.app marks every Forest Service trailhead in the lower 48 with a brown TH badge, the same brown as a forest road's marker. An orange dot on the badge means a permit, a quota or a reservation is on file for that trailhead. Badges show on Topo and Hybrid when you zoom in to forest scale. Trailheads are coming to the iPhone app.

Read a trailhead's rules

Click a badge to open its card. Under the name, Permit required or Reservation required says the most important thing first. Below it, the rules are grouped by the page they come from: the trailhead's own page, then each wilderness and permit it falls under. Click a rule to read it in full, with a link to the page it came from and the day Glassing read it.

Reading the rules comes with a subscription. The badges and the orange dot are free.

No access rules on file means Glassing found no rules for that trailhead. It does not mean none apply.

Know the limits

The rules are a summary of the Forest Service's own pages and Recreation.gov, read ahead of time and checked before they appear. A page can change after Glassing reads it, and a summary can miss a rule. Before a trip, open the source link on the card. The Forest Service, Recreation.gov and the signs at the trailhead always win.

Trailheads in national parks, and on other public land, are not covered yet.
